XTERRA Trail Run
World Championship

Background

Combining nature, culture, and physical activity, sports tourism has a lot in common with adventure tourism. Due to the worldwide reach of sports tourism, numerous international sporting events have had a huge impact on global tourism. The crown jewel of the XTERRA Trail Run Series is the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, and the majestic Kualoa Ranch in Hawai‘i has served as the host site since the creation of this prestigious event in 2008. On behalf of Hawai‘i Tourism Hong Kong, we would like to inspire more Hong Kong trail runners to visit Hawai‘i to experience its world class nature featuring some of the most diverse and scenic terrain on the planet.

Solution

  • We supported Hong Kong-based leading trail runner Wong Ho-Chung and a crew from Asia Trail Magazine in the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. The 21-kilometer race, held on December 3, 2008 at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, attracted more than 1,230 athletes from around the world.

  • Wong completed the course in one hour and 32 minutes, close to the timed finishes of some of the world's top cross-country runners, including Joseph Gray (USA) and Sage Canaday (USA). This placed him second runner-up in his age category. Wong also ranked 8th overall in the race and was the only Asian contestant in the top ten finishers.

  • Wong’s achievement was featured in Hong Kong’s leading English-language newspaper, South China Morning Post, and on the social media channels of The North Face Adventure.
